Career Outreach Peer (Part of the Career Peer Leadership Professional Development Program for Health Professional Students)

Office of Carrer and Professional Development

90% remote, with flexible scheduling for 4 mandatory in-person bimonthly Career Carnival outreach staffing shifts every quarter at the Parnassus Student Food Market

$30 an hour

Approximately 5 hours per week during the academic year with flexibility around academic and professional obligations.

This Career Outreach Peer role entails a 3-5 hours/week commitment and would work under the general direction of the OCPD Clinical Careers Interim Assistant Director, Anna Reeves, and Program Manager, Lydia Erickson.

Career Outreach Peers will have two main roles:

1 - OUTREACH:

Peers will spend 75% of their time promoting an understanding of career and professional development issues and resources amongst health professional students on campus by staffing OCPD’s Career Carnival at the Parnassus Student Food Market.

THE CAREER CARNIVAL (15% of the time): These occur most 2nd & 4th Thursdays between Aug-Dec and Jan-May. There are 2 shift slots per hour starting from 3:30-6:30pm. Career Outreach Peers are expected to sign up for a minimum of 4 one hour shifts per quarter (opportunities for other F2F outreach activities are available if there are clinical training conflicts)

VIDEO AND NEWSLETTER EDITING (55% of the time): This includes editing existing video projects and also collaborating monthly with fellow Career Outreach Peers in your population to create and edit a monthly newsletter for your population.

A - VIDEO EDITING: Video editing projects are open-ended. Career Peers are asked to edit existing interprofessional career counselor informational interviews into 1-2 minute video clips using iMovie for inclusion in the H-team alumni video editing library whenever your schedule allows.

B - NEWSLETTER: As for the newsletter, this involves independently sourcing and interviewing faculty, alumni and colleagues in your respective fields and conducting 1 recorded informational interview via Zoom per quarter to uncover and navigate hidden curricula, then creating a Youtube playlist, to disseminate in your newsletter.

For the newsletter, peers will need to learn and practice using their conversational skills. This includes learning about and using investigative reporting best practices to brainstorm topics and questions to discuss with senior professionals during informational interviews that can help you gain confidence and learn how to stand out. They will need to identify concrete actionable career tips and trends to share for each newsletter, research and co-create career and professional development resources, and building community by sharing fun and inspiring stories and/or photos of achievements, challenges, and social events happening in your population.

ALUMNI OUTREACH MARKETING (5%): This includes promoting and sharing content on UCSFConnect, which involves thanking alumni that you’ve done informational interviews with and sharing links to your newsletters and/or video clips from the informational interviews.

2- CAREER CAPSTONE PORTFOLIO PROJECT (25%)

This is an open ended career and professional development capstone portfolio project in alignment with their professional goals. For example, you could research a career path of interest to you and then document and curate all the things you’re doing to become a competitive candidate in order to create a resource for other students interested in similar career paths. For instance, you could create a year-by-year timeline of activities to engage in, with hyperlinked resources that you used or created, or a social media alumni advice video reel of how to navigate complex professional environments with hidden rules. The Capstone project would depend on your individual goals and could be worked on yearly as you progress through your program. Along the way, each of our Career Peers would receive structured mentorship and training from their supervisor. Lastly, the author of each resource would be featured on OCPD’s website so that each Career Outreach Peer could be recognized for their leadership, expertise and creativity.

Responsibilities will vary depending on the nature of each Career Peer’s professional development goals, interests, and skills but will generally include the following:

-Learning and mentorship in career and professional development topics, including developing competitive application materials, learning how to conduct informational interviews like an investigative reporter, building marketing and outreach skills, facilitating programs, and developing and disseminating resources

-Sourcing alumni in your chosen field, conducting and recording informational interviews on Zoom, and editing those, and existing videos into our Health Team video clip library

-Creating or updating specialty or field-specific career development timelines for your population

-Collaborating on outreach and service campaigns for health professional students, including developing and managing engaging informative online resources, webpages, video and social media campaigns, and taking turns staffing our bi-monthly Career Carnival at the Parnassus Student Food Market

-Creating and/or contributing to your population’s monthly newsletter, including…

A - Brainstorming thoughtful and nuanced professional development topics that would be of interest to your colleagues

B - Researching career and professional development trends and challenges to create engaging actionable resources for students

C - Interviewing faculty, alumni, and colleagues on tips and trends to share
