Emergency Funding

Emergency funding is available for students with a financial hardship due to unexpected events. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for one of the following types of emergency aid.

Emergency Loans

In a financial emergency, students may be able to obtain a short-term emergency loan. This loan must be repaid within a specified time period (generally three months) so other needy students can benefit from these limited funds.

  • How do I apply?
    • Student needs to apply for an emergency loan in the Student Financial Services Office (SFS). Please contact our office via email, phone, or drop-in during regular business hours.
    • The emergency loan must be approved; and
    • The promissory note must be signed with SFS by 10 a.m. on a given day. If the student initiates the process with SFS later than 10 a.m., the request may not be processed until the next business day.
  • How will I receive my funds?
    • Emergency loan is disbursed between 1-3 business days
    • Bank processing time varies from institution to institution. Check in with your bank institution to ascertain their processing time
    • Decide on mode of payment: check mailed to home address on record, MCB pickup, or direct deposit
      • Make sure your address on record is correct to avoid delay
      • If you are opting for direct deposit, please complete a Non Payroll Direct Deposit Request form (EFT) (requires 2 business day set-up time)
  • How much can I borrow?
    • Short-term emergency loans may be granted up to $2,000.
  • How will I receive my funds?
    • Emergency loan is disbursed between 1-3 business days

    • Decide on mode of payment: check mailed to home address on record, MCB pickup, or direct deposit
      • Make sure your address on record is correct to avoid delay

  • How much time do I have to repay my loan?
    • Student has 90 days to pay back, without incurring interest
    • Student has 90 days to pay back to be eligible for additional emergency loans
  • How will I repay my loan?
    • Bill Pay through student’s bank account, quick and easy payment. Click here for an example of bill pay setup.
      • Add the Regents of the University of California, San Francisco as a payee
      • Include your UCSF Student ID No. as the account number.

    • Payment by ACH (Automated Clearing House) via their own banking institution or EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) in the form of a wire transfer:

      ACH is an electronic network for financial transactions in the US. ACH can take a few days for the money to be transferred. This is the less expensive option though there could be a small bank fee.

          To ensure proper payment credit to your emergency loan, add the following information:
          • Your name and phone number as the customer name
          • Your student ID and "emergency loan repayment" in the comments field

      EFT is a method to electronically move value from the student’s bank to UCSF’s bank. Wire transfers can take place in real time or fairly close to real time. Due to fund availability and speed of transaction, wire transfers are more expensive. Can cost up to $25.00 per transaction, on average.

Rapid Rehousing

This funding is awarded to those students with greatest financial need. The goal of this money is to secure, support, and prevent the imminent danger of student homelessness. If you are experiencing housing insecurity, please contact our office.
