Introduction: COLS Program and Housing Development. The Cost of Living Supplement (COLS) program will be phased out, but only as new student housing opens up. Year-by-year details are presented in an interactive timeline and here, as text. 

Please note: Dates, number of housing units, and funding distributions presented here are estimates based on projections as of August 2018 and are subject to revision based on unforeseen changes in the construction timeline and process, large swings in the Bay Area rental market, and other factors.

Academic Year 2016-17: COLS Program Launched — this is the first year COLS funding is offered to students.

  • COLS recipients: 1,291
  • Annual supplement per student: $2,400
  • Number of students housed on campus: 450

2017-18: COLS Program Expands — The number of students receiving COLS goes up by over 200.

  • COLS recipients: 1,530
  • Annual supplement per student: $2,400
  • Number of students housed on campus: 450

2018-19: COLS Program flat. There was a very modest decrease in the number of students receiving funding over the previous year.

  • COLS recipients: 1,474
  • Annual supplement per student: $2,400
  • Number of students housed on campus: 450

2019-20: Minnesota Street housing to open (fall 2019). Called "The Tidelands," this new housing is on Minnesota Street, near the Mission Bay campus. 

  • COLS recipients: 1,000
  • Annual supplement per student: $2,500 (Amount of award to individual students goes up by a modest $100 to adjust for inflation.)
  • Number of students housed on campus projected to increase to 950
  • Changes: COLS recipients to decrease by 500, as availability of housing is improved.

2020-21: Program continues with same award amount and number of recipients as in the previous year.

  • COLS recipients: 1,000
  • Annual supplement per student: $2,500
  • Number of students housed on campus: 950

2021-22: COLS Program continues with no changes anticipated over the previous year.

  • COLS recipients: 1,000
  • Annual supplement per student: $2,500
  • Number of students housed on campus: 950

2022-23: Hastings I to open. First phase of shared student housing development at UC Hastings is projected to open. This is the final year of the COLS supplement program.

  • COLS recipients: 500
  • Annual supplement per student: $2,500
  • Number of students housed on campus: 1,250
  • Changes: COLS recipients decreased by 500 again, as availability of housing is further improved. Individual awards raised by $100 to adjust for inflation.
